Africa

An Eco-Tourism Adviser at the Environmental Foundation for Africa, Sierra Leone

What's the context and purpose of the role?

The Environmental Foundation for Africa (EFA) aims to protect and restore the environment of West Africa. The organisation focuses on environmental education and awareness raising, restoring degraded lands and forests and equipping people with sustainable livelihood skills. Tourism has great potential in Sierra Leone, as the country is blessed with unique natural beauty. However, there are many barriers to tourism development, such as inadequate infrastructure and a general lack of in-country tourism expertise. EFA is involved in an eco-tourism project on Tiwai Island, and hopes to bring income opportunities to local people whilst preserving the environment.

What does the role involve?

Developing a sound business plan for eco-tourism development on Tiwai Island
Exploring methods of income diversification, i.e. through goods sold, unique tours etc
Developing strategies for communities to participate in the development of Tiwai
Organising relevant skills training for existing staff and within the communities
Collaborating with the wider tourism industry to effectively promote sustainable tourism in Sierra Leone

What skills, experience and personal qualities are needed for the role?

You'll need a business, tourism or environmental qualification and at least 3 years' experience relating to eco-tourism. Experience in coordinating practical training and workshops is essential, as are good planning skills. Management and leadership skills are also important and you should have an understanding of people-centred development. You'll be travelling on rough roads and occasionally lodge in rural communities, so patience, adaptability and a sense of adventure are essential for this placement!

And the rest…

Sierra Leone borders Liberia to the southeast, the Republic of Guinea to the north, and the Atlantic Ocean to the West. Your time in Sierra Leone will be split between EFA's office in Lakka, a seaside village just 30km drive from the capital Freetown, and the Tiwai Island Wildlife Sanctuary. Tiwai is located on the Moa River in Eastern Sierra Leone, about 300km from Freetown. The island is home to over 135 bird species and has the densest population of primates in the world. And if you're lucky, you might spot the rare and elusive pygmy hippopotamus! On Tiwai, you'll be staying at the research centre, which has piped water, solar electricity, a fridge and small kitchen. At Lakka, you'll be based in EFA's guesthouse. There are a number of shops in the village and a small number of bars and restaurants on a wide sandy beach. Nearby Freetown is known for it's beautiful scenery and natural beaches and offers a wide range of shops, markets and leisure facilities.

We'll ask you to commit to 24 months to make a sustainable contribution to our development goals. In return, we'll give you comprehensive financial, personal and professional support. We'll provide you with extensive training before your placement, and our financial package includes a local salary, return flights, accommodation, insurance and more. When you return to your home country, we'll help you to resettle and many of our returned volunteers stay involved with us long after their placement ends. www.vso.org.uk/volunteering
